Fiorito - The cops came and took my gun - thestar.com

The last time I used it, I was walking along a hydro cut when I surprised a deer in the long dry grass. She leapt away in slow motion, flanks rippling, nostrils flaring; too beautiful. I haven't hunted since. I own no shells. But it's my gun, dammit. I guess, when the Feds began the long-gun registry, I should have lied and not bothered to register the damn thing.

2014? Are they serious?

Google isn’t alone in dropping IE6: when Apple launched its MobileMe service it raised eyebrows by never supporting IE6 in the first place; similarly, Microsoft itself won’t be supporting IE6 in its own Office Web applications. Microsoft has been encouraging Windows users to update to IE7 and IE8, but doesn’t plan to force anyone to do anything: Microsoft officially intends to support IE6 through early 2014. via digitaltrends.com

Michael V. Hayden - Obama admnistration takes several wrong paths in dealing with terrorism - washingtonpost.com

We got it wrong in Detroit on Christmas Day. We allowed an enemy combatant the protections of our Constitution before we had adequately interrogated him. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is not "an isolated extremist." He is the tip of the spear of a complex al-Qaeda plot to kill Americans in our homeland. In the 50 minutes the FBI had to question him, agents reportedly got actionable intelligence. Good. But were there any experts on al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in the room (other than Abdulmutallab)?

Premier Danny Williams going to U.S. for heart surgery - probably against the (unjust) law.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams is set to undergo heart surgery this week in the United States. CBC News confirmed Monday that Williams, 59, left the province earlier in the day and will have surgery later in the week. The premier's office provided few details, beyond confirming that he would have heart surgery and saying that it was not necessarily a routine procedure. via cbc.ca The fact that this is against the law in Canada is pure bullshit.

Your customers are asking to be engaged by your site, give it to them.

Was in a meeting this afternoon with a client who was testing their site with some users. What we found out was interesting. The site was rated very positively by 95% of the visitors but they were all asking for one more thing: Engage us - give us a reason to come back because otherwise we won't. We've been working with this client for a long time, and have always pushed for more dynamic sites with more timely information - we almost never have gotten that through the design phase because: "

Acorn, the image editor for humans.

Acorn is an image editor built for the Mac with simplicity in mind. Fast, easy, and fluid, Acorn provides the tools you need to alter and enhance your images, without any overhead. Acorn feels right, it won't drain your bank account, and you don't need a Ph.D. in computer graphics to use it. via flyingmeat.com I've been using this almost all day and really like that the key commands are VERY similar to Photoshop - all of the key ones I use all the time without thinking are the same so far.

Automating a portion of the Rails 3 upgrade process

I’ve been playing with upgrading some apps to Rails 3 (some open-source, some not), and I’ve sort of gotten some of the process down to a science. So what does a developer do when something is down to a process? Automate! I’ve created a (pretty hacky) gem named rails-upgrade (installable by a simple gem install rails-upgrade) to automate some of the more annoying parts of the upgrade from Rails 2.
